How Do People Sleep At Night?

Seriously – How do they sleep?

How do you get up in the morning, go to work, and not do your job? And not only that…. How do you not do your job while knowing… That someone else is doing it for you?

I love my job. I really do. Most days I wake up looking forward to what the day may bring. In my small way, I get to help people. I have been blessed with technical abilities which allow me to understand how things work (or are supposed to work), and how to fix them when they go wrong.

My role is a small one in the overall picture, but it touches many other roles. When a customer runs into a problem, often he or she will reach out to me first because they know that I will respond, that I am likely to have a solution, and/or that if I don’t have a solution I will be able to find someone who does.

Finding the right person doesn’t always solve the problem, though. Sometimes that person just won’t do their job, and I am left holding the bag. Since I was the last person the customer had a successful contact with, I am the one they turn to when their problem isn’t resolved.

Today, like many other days, I worked a full day doing my real job, and then spent 5 hours in my hotel trying to troubleshoot a problem via email, and trying to roust someone to go do their job.

I wonder what would happen if one day, I just didn’t?
